About the Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is located in the state capital city of Jackson. The hospitals in our university system include Children's of Mississippi Hospital, Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, and Conerly Critical Care Hospital. Also on campus is the Methodist Rehabilitation Hospital and the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Medical Center.

The Jackson Medical Mall, located about one mile from campus, incorporates our teaching clinics, provides extraordinary opportunities for service to our patients, and compliments the 80,000-square-foot multispecialty University Physicians Medical Pavilion on the main campus. Our providers also see patients at Grant's Ferry specialty Clinic, Select Specialty Clinic, and LB Internal Medicine clinic, all nearby.

Our department is committed to advancing education by setting the highest standards for professional development. Over the past decade, the department has increased the annual number of our trainees by 36 percent to 120 while at the same time maintaining one of the highest pass rates on the internal medicine board examination in the United States.

The Medical Center and the Department of Medicine have all the bells and whistles of the great training centers. From heart, kidney and bone marrow transplantation to training programs in medicine-pediatrics, geriatrics and allergy immunology, an optimal and cutting-edge learning environment is our focus and our pride. Our faculty members have come from many of the best academic health centers, and have increased in number by 50% over the past decade.

Our department continues to expand its research activities. Faculty members continue to participate in nationally funded research and publish in the highest quality journals. In the past 10 years, our annual support for research has increased by 670% with a similar increase in productivity. Most importantly many of our publications include our trainees providing them with the opportunity to learn research skills and participate in scholarly activity
